Play by Eugène Ionesco presented by the Lebenssplitter theater group at the Dreigroschentheater. Directed by Markus Klemenz
This time it's not the king who dies, this time it's the people. Individuals, couples and entire crowds die. Ionesco has filled twenty garishly grotesque death sketches and added them to an apocalyptic Punch and Judy show.
Doctors accuse politicians of being to blame and vice versa. The cause of the great dying is not known. It is generally assumed to be an epidemic. Intensive research leads nowhere. There is no cure for death. People no longer recognize metaphysical points of view, push aside behaviours of the past, behave like uncontrolled chickens and seek their salvation in repressive social utopias. Yet Ionesco's view of man also reveals a spark of hope: in the recognition of "the neighbor" - as an expression of humanity and an inner freedom that is always possible. "Triumph of Death" is a bittersweet, grotesque dance of death with relentless poignancy and deep black humor.
Eugène Ionesco is considered the most important French playwright of the post-war period and a leading exponent of absurdist theater.
