Reading and talk
Jakob Springfeld
Moderation: Tilman Rau
Insults, open hatred and threats of violence are part of Jakob Springfeld's everyday life. The 23-year-old is one of the young people in Saxony who are politically active on the left. He fights against the right, against hatred and against his fear. However, he is also trying to show Saxony's other face: Tolerance, anti-racism and democracy. He wants to point out structures that make it far too easy for right-wing pawn catchers and does not spare the police and local politics from criticism.
His new book Der Westen hat keine Ahnung, was im Osten passiert. Why the rise of the right is a threat to us all will also be a topic: Attacks on refugees are on the rise, the AfD is planning massive deportations and neo-Nazi positions have become "normal" in many places. The firewall has long since fallen. Although the far right is on the rise nationwide, West Germany looks down on the East in particular - often from above.
Jakob Springfeld was born and grew up in Zwickau. In Stuttgart, he received the Theodor Heuss Medal for special commitment to democracy and civil rights. ZEIT-Campus has named him one of the 100 most important East Germans.
