A serious coronavirus illness was the starting point for Jonas Lüscher's new novel, which spans centuries into the near future; the first-person narrator has recognized the limits of life's promises of happiness and knows that it's not about just going on and on. Several times this novel starts to tell us about just that. For example, we meet an Algerian soldier in the First World War who gets up and leaves after a poison gas attack. In the Cairo of the future, a stand-up comedian observes an android laughing at her jokes. A Bohemian weaver is replaced by an automated loom. Jonas Lüscher lives in Munich; his books have been published in over twenty languages.
