Woyzeck

Location:
Wilhelma Theater, Neckartalstr. 9, 70376 Stuttgart

Woyzeck is at the bottom of society. In order to provide for his girlfriend Marie and their child, Woyzeck takes on any odd job that comes his way. He regularly shaves his captain and lets the doctor put him on a diet of peas as part of an extremely questionable medical experiment. Hounded, driven and tortured, Woyzeck soon seems more like a trained animal than a free man. His Marie is ridiculed by society for having a child out of wedlock and is viewed as nothing more than a sexual object by the drum major, whom she throws herself at for a pair of earrings. As a result, Woyzeck loses his grip on reality and drifts into a world of brutal fantasies. He gets himself a knife.

Woyzeck, the drama fragment from the estate of Georg Büchner, who died at the age of 23, revolves around a man who is radically exploited by society and then finally resorts to the knife. With three young actors, Edith Ehrhardt stages the eloquent and visually powerful play as an examination of social constraints and hardships and as a search for what "lies, steals, harasses and murders" in us. Woyzeck is a pawn in society, pushed around, marginalized, without a chance. A driven man. Anyone could be Woyzeck.
